At PRMC, surgery is performed by a group of highly trained health care professionals who make quality patient care their professional responsibility. The surgical team includes the following:
Surgeon. A physician with special training chosen by the patient to perform the operation. The type of surgeon depends on the type of operation.
Surgical assistant. A physician or specially trained and certified assistant who assists the surgeon during the operation. More than one physician may assist with surgical procedures.
Anesthetist. A certified registered nurse anesthetist (C.R.N.A.) is a registered nurse (R.N.) with additional education and clinical training in the administration of anesthesia.
Operating room technician and/or scrub nurse. People responsible for handing surgical instruments and supplies to the surgeon and his assistant.
Preoperative nurse (circulator). An R.N. who plans, implements and evaluates a patient`s care throughout the operative procedure.
