Abdominal Sonogram
DEFINITION: Imaging of the Gallbladder, Liver, Pancreas, Kidneys, and Spleen. An Abdominal Sonogram uses sound waves to make its images. With sound waves we are able to visualize organ structures.
PURPOSE: With the use of ultrasound we are able to visualize the:
Gallbladder: To check for inflammation, stones, polyps or bile duct obstruction.
Liver, Pancreas, Kidneys, Spleen: To check for any texture or size variations which may indicate disease.
PREPARATION: A low fat supper should be eaten the evening before the exam. No dairy products or carbonated beverages. Nothing to eat or drink after midnight.
DURING THE EXAM: You will be lying on your back and a gel will be applied to your skin. This get acts as a conductor for the ultrasoud beam. When the technologist is scanning, you may be asked to hold your breath or to roll up on your left or right side.
AFTER THE EXAM: You will be returned to your room or dismissed. Your doctor will inform you of the results.
YOUR DIET: Your normal diet and activities may be resumed following the exam. |
