Barium Enema
DEFINITION: Examination in Radiology Dept. using a special enema to study the colon.
PURPOSE: The Barium Enema tends to make you somewhat uncomfortable but allows visualization of colon structures. The Barium enema is used to reveal any abnormal anatomy or malformation of the bowel.
PREPARATION: Use Fleet Prep Kit #1-Follow instructions in Prep Pack for 24-hour prep.
- Liquid breakfast the day before exam.
- 8 oz.. of liquid every hour for three hours.
- Liquid lunch followed by Phospho-soda 1 ½ oz.
- 8 oz. of liquid every hour for three hours.
- Liquid supper, followed by four Fleet Bisacodyl tablets.
- Liquids till midnight, then nothing to eat or drink after midnight.
- MORNING OF EXAM: Two hours before exam, use Bisacodyl suppository.
- Prior to start of the examination, Outpatients will be given a Fleet`s enma.
Inpatients will be given two 1500 cc(s) enemas or till clear.

DURING THE EXAM: In the Radiology Department the patient lies on his/her side and the the barium is introduced by enema. Fluoroscopic and radiographic images are obtained, which show structure and form of the entire colon. At the completion of the exam you will be asked to evacuate the barium, an additional x-ray will then be taken.
AFTER THE EXAM: If you tend to be constipated you may need to take up to two tablespoons of milk of magnesia three times a day for two days to facilitate the removal of barium. It is recommended following any barium procedure that you drink plenty of fluids. |
