Bone Scan (Nuclear Medicine)
DEFINITION: Functional images taken of the skeletal anatomy with the use of Radioisotopes.
PURPOSE: To show disease or injuries to the bone.
PREPARATION: No preparation, maintain your normal diet and medication.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Report to the Radiology Dept. at your scheduled appointment time.
- You will receive a small radioisotope injection.
- If you are an outpatient you will be asked to return in two to three hours.
- If you are an inpatient you will be injected in your room. Someone will come to get you at the appropriate time.
DURING THE EXAM: The Technologist will take a series of pictures. This may involve your whole body or specific areas. It is important that you not move during the time a picture is being taken. You may be lying, sitting or standing.
AFTER THE EXAM:
Inpatient: You will be returned to your room.
Outpatient: The Technologist will check the films with the Radiologist, then you will be dismissed. |
