Small Bowel Enema
DEFINITION: A fluoroscopic and x-ray study of the small bowel after administration of barium through a nasogastric tube.
PURPOSE: The visualize the interior and exterior walls of the small intestine.
PREPARATION: Nothing to eat or drink after midnight until the examination is completed.
DURING THE EXAM: A tube will be positioned in the duodenum. The barium is then administered through the tube directly into the small bowel. Films will be taken during the filling of the small bowel.
AFTER THE EXAM: If you tend to be constipated you may need to take up to two tablespoons of milk of magnesia three times a day for two days to facilitate the removal of the barium. It is recommended following any barium procedure that you drink plenty of fluids. |
