CAT Scan Abdomen & Pelvis
DEFINITION: The use of x-rays and a computer to create pictures of your body.
PREPARATION: Any medications, including insulin, should be continued as prescribed.
DAY BEFORE EXAM: After lunch drink 30cc Gastrographin mixed with 2 cans cold soda pop. Then, drink 3 more pints of fluid along with your usual meals.
DAY OF EXAM: Continue your usual meals until 2 hours prior to your exam.
- Non-Surgical: Readi-Cat (dilute barium) for patients with no abdominal or pelvic surgery planned within 72 hours after this exam. 90 minutes prior to your exam, start drinking 150c-- of Readi cat every 20 minutes until bottle is empty
- Surgical:Gastrographin option for patents with planned pelvic or abdominal surgery. 90 minutes prior to your exam, drink 30cc of Gastrographin mixed with one can of cold soda pop. No additional food or drink until your exam is complete.
Please arrive at Admissions one hour prior to your exam if lab work is needed. If no lab is needed, please arrive 30 minutes prior to exam time. Consent for use of contrast will be obtained, if needed.
DURING THE EXAM: The technologist will position you. It is very important not to move during the exam. You will hear the scanner operate.
AFTER THE EXAM: Outpatients may be asked to wait a few minutes then resume normal activity.
Inpatients will be returned to their room.
