CAT Scan Chest
DEFINITION: The use of x-rays , with a computer, to generate clear cross- sectional views of the human body.
PURPOSE: To diagnose diseases or injuries of the chest.
PREPARATION: Do not eat any solid food during the two hour period prior to your exam. We encourage you to drink abundant fluids, until one hour before the exam. Any medications, including insulin, should be continued as prescribed. Prior to the exam, you will be asked to fill out a contrast screening form and a consent for the use of contrast.
DURING THE EXAM: You will be asked to lie down on a special table while the CT Technologist positions you. It is very important that you do not move during the exam. You will hear a click as the unit turns on and off. You will also hear a hum while the pictures are being taken. The time for this examination is approximately one hour.
AFTER THE EXAM: If you are an outpatient, you may be asked to wait ten additional minutes. This is to observe your response to the contrast material. You may then go home and resume normal activity. If you are an inpatient you will be returned to your room.
