DEFINITION: The EEG is an electrical recording of brain wave activity.
PURPOSE: The EEG is used by the physician to help diagnose some diseases or injuries to the brain
PREPARATION:
Some medications, such as sleep aids and tranquilizers, may be withheld from your use for up to 24 hours prior to the EEG.
Omit coffee, tea, cola drinks or any other caffeine containing beverage.
Shampoo your hair, the night before your exam, or the morning of the exam.
Omit hair spray, mousse, conditioner, hair dressings, or any other hair additives.
DURING THE EXAM: The Technologist will apply a shower type cap to your head. These caps contain special electrodes that will be prepared and tested by the technologist. After preparation is complete, you will be assisted to the bed where you must lie quietly for forty-five to fifty minutes. The recording takes place at this time. You should plan on spending about one hour with us for this examination.
AFTER THE EXAM: You may then resume your normal activity. Your physician will contact you with the results.
