ERCP
DEFINITION: This test is done using an Endoscope to see both the bile and pancreatic ducts. An Endoscope is a flexible tube, with a light, that allows the physician to see the organs.
PURPOSE: Is to diagnose disease of the bile ducts and pancreas, or to obtain direct secretion or cells for examination.
PREPARATION: You will be asked to take nothing by mouth after midnight, until after the test.
DURING THE EXAM: The Endoscope is passed through the esophagus and stomach into the intestines to see the opening of the gallbladder and the pancreas. Contrast media, a special dye or air, may be used to visualize the organs. This procedure must be performed in the Radiology Department. X-Rays are taken following administration of the contrast material.
AFTER THE EXAM: You will return to your room. Nurses will be monitoring your vital signs and physical condition. You will be allowed to eat in two to four hours. |
