| DEFINITION:
This test is used to identify or assess gallbladder
disease.
PURPOSE:
To reveal the presence of gallstones, polyps or a
non-functioning gallbladder.
STANDARD
PREPARATION: You will be asked to come by
the Radiology Department to pick up special capsules
for your gallbladder exam. You will be asked to have
a fat free supper the evening before the exam. This
may include, jelly, fruit, and coffee or tea with
sugar if desired. Avoid fats, such as, cream or dairy
products. Nothing to eat after the evening meal, but
you may have small sips of water, if desired.
At 8:00
PM, you will need to take in succession the six Oragraphin
capsules. These capsules may be taken with water and
at three minute intervals. On the morning of the exam,
you may have eight ounces of water, then nothing until
the exam is completed.
OR
REINFORCED
GALLBLADDER: Two capsules, three times a
day, for two days, eating low fat meals. X-rays are
taken on the morning of the third day.
DURING
THE EXAM: Films will be taken of your gallbladder
in various positions.
AFTER
THE EXAM: You will be dismissed and may resume
your normal diet.
FOR
GALLBLADDER & UPPER GI COMBINATION: Nothing
to eat or drink after midnight until the exam is complete.
