DEFINITION: This test may be done in conjunction with the OB SONOGRAM or PELVIC SONOGRAM. The Radiologist or your own doctor may feel that this procedure is needed. This examination takes the standard sonogram examination one step further, by introducing a special probe that can be placed directly in the vagina. A developing fetus at six to eight weeks can be easily seen by the standard exam. Before six to eight weeks however the standard exam may not give the information needed. The Intravaginal Sonogram using the special probe, improves visibility due to its position inside the vagina. Under six to eight weeks of age, a fetus may not be seen by standard sonography. The ovaries also are small and difficult to see through the abdomen. Placing the Intravaginal Probe closer to the uterus and ovaries, improves the quality of the images. The Intravaginal Sonogram may be used when greater detail of the ovaries and uterus is needed. In the following situations this examination may be needed:
Early Pregnancy
Suspected Ectopic Pregnancy (outside the uterus)
For evaluation of pelvic pain, infection or masses
