OB Sonogram
DEFINITION: An examination using sound waves to create images of the pelvic anatomy and the fetus. The images are projected on a video monitor, then printed on film as a permanent record.
PURPOSE: To determine the position of the fetus and placenta. The fetal age also is determined.
PREPARATION: A full bladder is essential for this examination. Thirty-two ounces of liquid approximately sixty to ninety minutes prior to the examination is recommended. Do not empty your bladder.
DURING THE EXAM: You will be lying on your back and a gel substance will be applied to your skin. This gel acts as a sound conductor for the ultrasound examination. The exam takes approximately an hour, due to the measurements that must be taken for fetal age determination.
AFTER THE EXAM: You may empty your bladder. You will then be returned to your room or dismissed. Your doctor will inform you of the results. |
