Pelvic Sonogram
DEFINITION: An examination using sound waves to create images of the pelvic anatomy. The images are projected on a video monitor, then printed on film as a permanent record.
PURPOSE: Used to identify pelvic or ovarian masses, infections and detection of ectopic pregnancy.
PREPARATION: A full bladder is essential for this examination. Thirty-two ounces of liquid approximately sixty to ninety minutes prior to the examination is recommended. Do not empty your bladder.
DURING THE EXAM: You will be lying on your back and a gel substance will be applied to your skin. This gel acts as a sound conductor for the ultrasound examination. This exam takes approximately thirty minutes if your bladder is full.
AFTER THE EXAM: You may empty your bladder. You will then be returned to your room or dismissed. Your doctor will inform you of the results. |
