A
New Beginning
Jane was the adopted daughter of a physician who worked
near Oklahoma City for his entire life. Dr. Roy Chester
(Chet) Warren was a traveling country doctor who made
house calls, delivered babies, performed tonsillectomies
and served several rural Oklahoma counties. He gave
his adopted daughter a new beginning.
Dr.
Warren had a tremendous work ethic and eventually
his heart would give way to the work he enjoyed. In
fact, the day before he died, he saw 30 patients.
He was also a man who cared for people as well as
providing a loving home for his family.
Recently
his adopted daughter, with a Pratt connection, wanted
to honor her father with a memorial gift. The memory
of her father and the things he stood for needed to
be honored. Her memorial gift once again recognizes
the fact that all of us know where we came from and
who modeled the traits that make our lives richer
and fuller.
Why
do I tell this story? I tell this story because giving
seems to have a historical benchmark. It is a trait
that we learn. Our “new beginning” is
based on the behaviors we have learned from those
we love or admire.
There
are many examples of this throughout our history.
In fact our nation was founded on the willingness
of many who gave their lives for the freedom of speech,
a democratic way of life and the opportunity to worship
in our own way.
The
willingness to make the world better for everyone
through giving was taught to Jane. She learned it
not from formal instruction but from the acts of generosity
and kindness she saw in her father. He left her a
special legacy.
Throughout
the recent “Simply the Best” Capital Campaign
I witnessed many like Jane who wanted to give. Not
necessarily for their own credit, but to help PRMC
and the people that come to PRMC for medical treatment.
Unfortunately, many patients receive medical care
and can not afford to pay.
Many
PHF donors give because they like the fulfillment
of the exercise. They feel good because they have
done something for a charitable cause. We are thankful
for all those who have remembered the hospital with
generous gifts. We are amazed, humbled and grateful
when our friends demonstrate acts of kindness.

Opportunity
Knocks For Seniors . . . Again
Congress
passed the Pension Protection Act recently which provides
a special opportunity for seniors with IRA assets
for the 2006 and 2007 tax years. The IRA rollover
provision will help donors, age 70 ½ or older,
do the following:
- Transfer
up to $100,000 from their IRA to a qualified charitable
organization, like the Pratt Health Foundation (excluding
charitable trusts, donor advised funds and supporting
organizations).
- The
distributions count toward minimum required distribution
requirements.
- The
distribution generates neither taxable income nor
a tax deduction, so even those who do not itemize
their tax returns receive the benefit.
- The
gifts may be made in addition to any other charitable
gifts.
- Donors
may transfer up to $100,000 per year for 2006 and
2007 from their IRA account. It must be
transferred directly to a charity to work.
Many
may have already named the Foundation as a full or
partial beneficiary of an IRA but there are no tax
differences between doing it now and doing it later.
By naming an organization as the beneficiary at death,
they have avoided income and estate taxes on those
funds. Now, by making a lifetime gift of up to $100,000,
they are also making this gift free of income and
estate taxes. The true benefit is being able to watch
their charitable dollars at work while they are still
alive. Here is how it works:
- The
donor requests a transfer of funds from their IRA
plan administrator.
- The
IRA administrator transfers funds directly to the
charity.
- This
“qualified charitable distribution”
is excluded from the donor’s AGI.
